Attic renovation

For starters: it was after many years of consideration and angst that we finally decided to go ahead with renovating our very cool - but unfinished - attic space into a family room.
This space was so neat as it was, but we just weren't using it and need a family room.

So, I will do my best to post some pictures of our progress over the past 2+ years, starting with some before photos. I think I will have to post pictures in several separate postings to this thread so bear with me as it might take me several days to get them all posted...

We left the collar beams exposed and built the ceiling about 5 feet above them...

I love the way you designed this! You kept the spacious feel of the room - not always easy when finishing an attic.

I love this . I dream of a day when we can finish our attic. We will probably put a ceiling across the rafters so we still have storage space above. How are you heating your new space? We have some radiators already plumbed in, but they would need to be moved. looking forward to more pics.

Yes, we will miss the storage space for sure; but, there is a little cubby/crawlspace behind the bathroom wall. The bathroom was put in about 10 years ago, independently heated and insulated.
For heat in the rest of the space we are planning to put in a couple of electric baseboard heaters. The temperature up there actually stays pretty comfortable if we have the door to the second floor open. It would be chilly mid-January when the sun goes down though.
Cooling is going to be the bigger issue. For now the master plan includes fancy window a/c units (ugly!) and hopes of cool nights with the windows open ;-)
