Ron, your house has beautiful details. The work is tedious but rewarding.

I think your piece of lead there very strongly suggests that the stairs were faux grained - it at least confirms paint rather than stain

James, thanks. Mick, yes part of the wood work was faux grained. You can see the grey base the grainer put down. This would be the ebony part of the tricolour arrangement.

oh the detail is so beautiful! If it were me, I don't think I'd want to hide all that nice real woodgrain under paint or heavy stain but I guess it is original if it was faux painted, and I see why you want some contrast too. I guess whatever you do will look beautiful because the shapes are just so nice!

I guess I picked up a couple of barbecues.. craigslist free always seems to have one nicer than mine. My neighbor took a look down the side of my house and said oh I guess that's where all the barbecues go to die ;-)

Ok, got the rest stripped and the first go around on stain prep done.

Over the upcoming week, I’ll do some final detailing. Maybe by next weekend I will have a staining plan organized.

Folks, finally got the staining choices picked.
Image
The bark black is actually a bark brown, it will be going on the boarders, the brown will be the on the field and on the curved detail and the reddish will fill the inset panels. This combination is pretty close to the original stain arrangement.
What a task making a decision, must have used up twenty paint sticks getting a combination we both liked.

Folks, was out at an auction yesterday, look what I found. A large and heavy front door about the same age as the doors on Gothichome.
Image
Had most of the hardware in place including three rather large and heavy steeple top hinges. But, it’s just another old door you say, I say you’re correct but look what came off the door.
Image
Judging by the greenish patina I’m pretty sure it’s brass.
I’m into the door for seventy canuc bucks. After selling off the hinges and the door my hope is to have the bell for free.

Thats a fine "turn" of events, Gothichome ! (Is the doorbell a turner or some type of lever lifter ?)

The door is a good one, too, but if you have no use for it, throw it to the winds of Kijiji.
