Folks, was browsing a corner of our lot, in amongst the cedars, black walnuts, aspens ect. We have this tree. Seems to be two different trees growing from one trunk. First off we have this.

Further up the canopy we have this

Now the first pic looks to be an oak, the second pic to my limited knowledge appears to be Aspen or at the least a poplar.
The mystery is they are growing from the same trunk? Hummm, not sure what to make of this.
Sorry for the blurred second pic but there is a very slight breeze, plus the mosquitoes we plotting to fly me away so I didn't Waite for a calm spell to click the camera.

The leaves in the second pic, are they attached to a more viney looking branching? Or is some of the thinner bits I see diagonally crossing just more oak that hasn't aged to thickness yet? Are you seeing any acorn formation on the more rounded leaves yet? (As opposed to the top pic with the lobed leaves.)

Here's a Brit page I found for IDing oaks. Aannd, after a few more listings down, found this NA field guide. Hrm. I just realized that latter might not be great as it's intended for eastern...but it also has an even split instead of the usual "eastern", so it might still be good. :eusa-think:

Lily, thanks for the link, the tree would appear to be an ordinary white oak. Nothing really special about that, although most of the large stands have long been harvested for the furniture trade a hundred years ago. Still a few about in Small wood lots and our yard it would seem.
I wasn't even aware we had an oak, till I was rummaging through the corner of our lot. I wasn't aware that oak leaves grew into there lobbed shape. On your mention I had a closer look at the canopy and noticed many leaves have only the slightest hint of lobes. I'll keep an eye out for acorns this year although I don't recall seeing them in the past.

I have a few in the way-back yard and it freaked me out at first becuase it seemed to be some weird mutant thing but then I found it on some leaf identification website.

Hey now you can sing !

Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush.
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we wash our face,
Wash our face,
Wash our face.
This is the way we wash our face
On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we comb our hair,
Comb our hair,
Comb our hair.
This is the way we comb our hair
On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we brush our teeth,
Brush our teeth,
Brush our teeth.
This is the way we brush our teeth
On a cold and frosty morning.

This is the way we put on our clothes,
Put on our clothes,
Put on our clothes.
This is the way we put on our clothes
On a cold and frosty morning.

Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush.
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning.

If the neighbors see the whole family doing it, they might call the guys with the clean white suits..
