A possible alternative could be panels of lattice.

There is 'cheap' lattice and the good stuff. 'Cheap' is that unplaned stuff that looks like lathe, typically in a diamond pattern, that many people use for new house or replacement porch skirting (when PVC isn't used). The good stuff is planed, thicker, and typically seen in a square pattern on old house porch skirting.

We have some pressure treated (PT), unpainted 'cheap' lattice that's been outside (fully exposed to the weather) and it's beginning to splinter now after 3 yrs. The same stuff that was primed and painted look as good as when we first put it out....so far.

chain link is ugly bit it lasts forever. some of it is green plastic coated, maybe that would do across the back where you don't see it so much? it goes very fast, you can move them. Sometimes I see free used ones. if they aren't too high they can sort of fit with heritage houses.
