Antique Fridges

I saw the thread on antique radios and that reminded me of our 'new' fridge. I believe it is a 1930's Kelvinator. We fished it out of the old barn and gave it an overhaul: New gaskets, new insulation (the old stuff was corrugated wax paper), new paint, and (thanks to my wifes father) a new compressor.

It runs like a champ now and is ready for another couple decades of service! The only thing left to do is fashion a new handle (I highly doubt I'll find a replacement). I have a chunk of aluminum in the garage I think will work well.

I love this! I had no idea you could restore an old fridge like this!

I might drop these guys a line http://www.antiqueappliances.com/ they might have the handle you need. Unless of course you want to fashion one yourself :D

Very nice! Legs on fridges make SO much sense... if you've ever moved your modern fridge and seen what's under it you know what I mean.

Many yrs ago I briefly had a Monitor top GE with legs and a little foot pedal to open the door and a light inside along with metal shelves and a tiny freezer compartment - cute as the dickens. It ran OK but had methyl chloride as a refrigerant, which I was told was toxic and highly explosive. So I donated it to a historical society and as far as I know it's still sitting in storage somewhere. I think I read they can put different refrigerant in it but who would do that?

My dad has a GE fridge in his basement, my mom and dad bought right after they married with S&H Green Stamps. It's been running since 1956, my model year is a little later and I'm still running too. HA

What a beauty! You did an amazing job on the restoration. If I had one of those in the kitchen, then I would move the monster out to the utility porch. I don't think my husband would be thrilled though.
