our 1850's house

Post by grammacake (WavyGlass) »

We bought this big old house about 5 yrs ago. We are finally able to start the renovations on it. We have a really big mess outside right now. It had an addition built on it about 28 yrs ago and all of it is having to be redone. We are putting a new tin roof on it. and rebuilding the roof line and adding a back porch. The original part of the house is still in pretty good shape. My daughter said that is was poplar wood. They used cheaper stuff on the addition.

I will post more pictures when we get it finished.
It doesn't look like much yet, but for the price we paid for it, I think it was worth it.We only paid my sister and brother in laws $15000,for it and 8 acres of land. Besides it is a family home. It used to belong to my mother-in-law's cousin, and my late hubby and I rented it when our kids were little, and then my in=laws bought it from him and they lived here for several years, until they passed away. My present hubby and I love it here and he said that he would be glad to fix it up. Since we have started on it though, I think he may be changing his mind. Not really, but it is a lot more work than we what we expected.

now that a large rambling home, you and Lotus Quarter need to get together and compare notes. I can see the grandness of the home even in the rough. Is That the ghost of Scarlet I see in the top window?

LOL, It could be her!!! My son-in-law thinks there are ghosts here. My daughter told him that was her ancestors complaining because the house got in the condition it is in to start with. Now we have rain to contend with today off and on, the picture of the backroom torn off was taken the day before yesterday. Hopefully the can get it all covered before it rains anymore.

One thing we found when pulling off the roof, is some old tin hat has scallops in it, We are thinking of salvaging some of it and using it for trim on the bottom of the front doors for a kick plate and maybe the ceiling of the breezeway if there is enough of it.

She looks to be a grand old lady. And she will be a beauty yet again - all your hard work will be worth it! That porch is amazing! How about some inside pictures?

Thanks. I would but I don't have much redone in it yet. There are 3 fireplaces in it. one in the living room, kitchen and downstairs bedroom, but are not in us , They have been closed off and have a gas heater in front of them. We will have ton have all of the chimneys reworked in order to use them. As soon as I get some good pictures I will post some on here.
