Another Garden - 2014

Post by mkeller234 »

I was inspired to post our own garden after seeing Mattswab's. First off, my wife and I are NOT gardeners... well, not good at least. This year I decided to build some raised beds on the cheap with pallet wood. I found decently heavy boards to use. I hope they don't rot too quickly, but only time will tell. Either way, with screws, chicken wire and stain I would guess that I spent 40 dollars or less on this project.

We still have plenty of room to fill. Our tomatoes and peppers are starting to grow, so that's exciting.

The screen frames can all be unbuckled and removed from the box for weeding and pruning. The trellis is for the raspberries, which are really tiny right now. I may get 2 other raspberries since the one looks kind of lonely.

2x6 feet of space for this tiny raspberry plant.

Looks good! I like the size, it's hard to keep a garden small. We started out with a plan for 3x6, but eventually ended up with 8x10 :S

I have been thinking about a fence, but haven't put one up yet. What are you trying to keep out?

Those are really nice-looking garden beds, especially the fenced one. I know the rabbits have been awfully prolific around here this year - I see at least two or three every night in my yard, as well as the monster-sized old groundhog that lives under my shed. Fortunately, they don't eat my roses. If you would like a blackberry bush to go with that raspberry, I'd be happy to send you some rooted canes. Mine grows so much each year (old farm soil with a high water table), that I have to keep it in check with a chainsaw. Unfortunately I never get any berries - the birds get to all of them first. And I'm not losing an arm to get the interior ones!

Looks nice and you are ahead of us. We haven't planted yet. Our seedlings are so tiny still. I think this weekend they will go into the ground.

We have groundhogs and chipmunks to worry about. I caught 1 groundhog and relocated him. Just 1 more to go.

We have a couple of rabbits that live somewhere around our backyard. I'm guessing somewhere in the foliage at the base of the sandstone blocks. I see them out there a lot.

shazapple, we are keeping it small for now so that we don't feel overwhelmed. There is so much to learn! I'll be building a compost bin next, hopefully in a month or so.

matchbookhouse, thanks for the offer! I'm not sure I want to get into large thorns. How bad are we talking here? Have you tried netting your berries? I figured I could toss a net over the trellis if I needed to. I assume I probably wont have any fruit for a couple of years though.

Thanks all! I'm pretty proud of them, but I had low expectations on how they might turn out. I'm glad the neighbors gave it there seal of approval too.
