Hello, folks! New here, without much to say. I had started a thread on interlocking metal weatherstripping for very old (1770's) double-hung windows on OHW, and received a suggestion to hop on over here, so...
Have spent all of my 38 years living in and restoring old houses. Recently purchased and moved into an old farm house, which is a bit of a head scratch. Family and records indicate this house was built between 1773 and 1779, and there is much data from the Mennonite Heritage Foundation and county records to support that. However, I see a lot of features in this house that also look mid-19th century. I suspect that some portion of the house does date to 1773, but that it was either expanded or very heavily renovated in the mid-1800's.
In any case, here are some photos. The stucco addition in the middle is ca.1894, and the newer addition on the right is 1994, but using stone reclaimed from the original barn.
The windows and doors in the house are very old, perhaps many of them original, although I do not believe most of them are still in their original locations. Likewise, the flooring is old or reclaimed, but I cannot believe some of it is original.
All first floor joists are round, hewn flat on two sides, whereas all second and third floor joists are sawn. The only exposed joists at the second or third floor levels have been finished, stripped, and then bleached. After all that abuse, I cannot tell if they were sawn on a circular or recip mill.
Many previous owners have committed many sins, and we are just beginning the process of undoing all of that, but I'm sure that's nothing new to you!
Hoping to share stories, give and ask for opinions and advice, and see some beautiful old homes!

Cool looking place! Eastern PA?
Or maybe VA (Spring looks a little further along for PA right now, I think)

Hi guys. Southeastern PA, but very good eye! Those are some photos from May 2011, actually.
Will try to post a few photos of the "innards" in the following days. It's a work in progress, as these old places tend to be.

That is an absolutely beautiful house. I love the old houses in PA - when I was growing up, my grandparents had an 18th-century house in Quakertown (near Allentown), and more recently an early 19th-century house near Gettysburg. My old house is a baby by comparison - but the oldest building in Grand Rapids only dates to the 1830's.

Regarding your weatherstripping question: I ordered a bunch from Architectural Builders Supply. They carry Dorbin weatherstripping. Their web site was terrible (very slow, prone to losing my shopping cart contents if I wasn't quick enough), but the service was good.

I don't know if they have all the interlocking stuff, but I got spring bronze door weatherstrip from Killian hardware. Its quite a site if you haven't looked before.
Welcome!

What a beautiful house! I went to college in Pennsylvania and love the old houses I saw there. Can't wait for more pictures!

You have a beautiful home there and in Southeastern PA you can drive to Killian's yourself, in Chestnut Hill. You could turn it into a food/bakery tour with a little antiquing on the side, if you so desired.
