My chimney and fireplace project

Post by brian89gp (WavyGlass) »

Just thought I would share, did this this past fall in order to install a wood burning fireplace. The photo's I have from a long time ago show simple chimney's with no fancy brickwork at the top so I replicated the simple design.

1. Old chimney torn down below roofline. Was wrapped in metal lath and cement by the PO, once I got the lath off the whole chimney came apart by hand. Proof that you should never ever stucco old brick.
2. Chimney built back up with new brick. Brick is almost an exact match color wise but is of a smaller dimension, you can't see the differences from the ground though. I did not want to mess with old brick and lime mortar on a short time table (first freeze was 3 weeks away from when I started
3. Mortar dye'd with powdered dye from lowes, 3 parts red 1 part black. Left the cleanup a bit messy and left the efflorescence as both make it appear older.
4. Used copper step flashing and mortared counter flashing. No glue, no caulk, and none of that other nasty stuff.
5. A 6" stainless flex liner with 1/2" wrap insulation was pulled up one of the flue's
6. Stainless chase cover put on the top
7. The original hearth pad was a half brick arch supported by the wood floor framing. I tore it out as well as the base of the hearth in the fireplace down about a foot. I then poured a 4" thick hearth pad with a 12" thick chunk of concrete inside the actual fireplace. All rebar is tied and fastened into the existing brickwork. 400lbs of concrete all said and done.
8. Used Type-N pre-mix mortar from Lowes
9. 3/8" joint struck with a 3/4" tool. From the ground the joints look flush but was struck with a tool to compact it and give it better weathering capabilities then a flush joint would have been.

Pictures to follow. First time laying brick I might add.

Outside view. Gas flue in back, wood fireplace up front. Fireplace has a 2' class-a pipe extension on it to give it enough clearance to the roof and to provide a height difference to prevent cross drafts from sucking smoke down the gas flue.
