It's coming along! Underlay is down and the steel is starting to go on.

A good amount of progress this week. The roofer was hoping to be done mid next week but I think that is going to be ambitious. Friday I had a couple loads of backfill delivered and today we finished filling in around the foundation. I was hoping to put some sort of coating on the styrofoam before burying it but that will have to wait until next year.

It is starting to look like a real house, what with backfill and roofing and all. Hopefully we will get the walls up this weekend as well.

The roof is finally done! I am glad to see the roofers go. They did a pretty good job matching the metal to the 'unique curves' of the old house.

The electrician comes next week, then I can insulate and I am ready for winter (technically it is already here.)

Looking good! I agree that the roofers did a good job matching it up.

How much square footage are you gaining? From the pictures, it looks like you're almost doubling the size of the house.

The original house is 20x30, and the addition is 24x26 on the first story, and 26x15 on the second. I would have liked to keep the footprint smaller, but the rooms couldn't go anywhere but the first floor. since our bedroom is on the first floor the master closet and bath had to be there too and we didn't want the laundry room in the basement. The porch was sized to fit the rest of the addition, and the second story was just a bonus (might as well make it into a room if you are going to have a 12/12 pitch)

We had one last day of warm weather before the ground froze solid, so it was our last chance to do some digging. The drain piping for everything in the addition could either zig zag into the old basement and tie into the cast iron, or go through the concrete and tie into the septic on the outside. My plumber wasn't too keen on trying to tie into the cast iron, and I wasn't too keen on losing the headroom, so I rented a concrete hole saw and went to work!

The previous owners had the septic tank replaced, so I knew the cast iron was mated to ABS somewhere along the way. We dug until we found it, and exactly how it was mated was quite... impressive?

Someone obviously hadn't heard of a Fernco coupling, or the hardware store had run out. What you see above is an old inner tube wrapped around the cast iron and abs piping, then wrapped with galvanized ducting and held in place with hose clamps. Amazingly it hadn't leaked, but this was the obvious spot to tie in. A couple fittings and Ferncos later and we were all set!

I rented a 5" hole saw and 15 minutes later (those things are heavy!) we had a hole with piping through it! The pipe is extra long and capped off so the plumber had lots to work with.

Christmas break has been nice, although not quite finished. I haven't had huge progress but that is ok since we have spent the time relaxing or catching up with friends.

During the semi nice weather we took the opportunity to install the high windows.

We have one window left to install in the end of the porch. I am very happy with the way my 'faux enclosed porch' idea is turning out.

The electrical rough in is finished and most of the walls are insulated, although not the roof as of yet. It is currently -13°C, but feels like -23°C so I will be happy to have the insulation finished!

I am getting such a kick out of your project. It helps to stretch it over two budget years, I bet.
