I did find a vent with working louvres from the 1800s that is the perfect fit for this hole! I actually don't think I mind that it is near the door...I kind of enjoy knowing there was a stove pipe there at one time. :)

I think I'm going to have this vent sandblasted and powdercoated, but I haven't decided what color yet.

I still haven't decided what to do with the smaller hole yet...

head for satin rather than totally flat, its more durable and just as correct.

Thanks, Don, Mick, and Phil!

Do you think I should paint this one from my living room too? It's pretty substantial! I've been seeing if I can find replacements for the other smaller vents because they are all bent, but this big one is pretty nice.

You may want to wait until your floors are refinished then select a color that matches your floor. Those newer grates were usually made to look like natural oak floors, some even had oak wood look finish applied!
