What is going on with this wood?

? I'm sure there is heart maple, it just means the inner, dead wood of the trunk. "Curley" and what not refers to the cuts ...

On the subject of the Cherry wood. I have a 12' long Amish made kitchen table made out of solid cherry (Hey,I have 7 kids,so no it's not too big). A few sections are very dark as compared to the others. One piece even starts out matching at one side of the table and gets very dark by the time it gets to the other side.
God grew it,not unlike my wife and kids-it looks perfect to me with all it's imperfections!

We too have a big family and an Amish made table!

Once't it hits the ground, it's all dead wood.

Ahhh,see I'm not familiar with western pine. I doubt there is much of that here in WI.
My guess was based on the common woods I see around here.
