Frame Disassembly

Post by Sashguy »

Quite often it is necessary to remove large panes of cylinder glass from frames where glass breakage must be minimized. I do this by disassembling the frame from around the glass. Here is my method where metal pins were used.

Locate the pins at the corner with a magnetic stud finder. The pins are typically installed on the outside side of the sash. There is normally one pin at the meeting rail, and one or two at the mortise and tenon.

Mark the position of the pin, and set a 3/8" hole guide over the center of the pin location.

Using a 3/8" overshot screw extractor, drill over the location of the pin. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0032YWQ6W/ref ... 1_ST1_dp_1

Remove the pin with needle nose pliers.

Using a wood block, support the glass and gently tap the stiles out from around the glass.

To reassemble the frame, clamp the frame together, drill deeper, and install 3/8" dowel.
