Door - two different woods?

Post by Lauren674 (WavyGlass) »

Stripped an original 100-ish year old door this weekend and on one side we found the odd pattern of walnut varnish only in the center panel we've found this before in the side that faces the hallway. We've never stripped the other side of these doors until now, and clearly that is oak. It truly appears that one side is pine, and the other side is oak. Have you ever heard of this? :o

I had a house that was oak in the front two rooms and pine everywhere else. The swinging door to the kitchen and the hall closet door were both pine with oak veneer on one side. Supposedly (according to the old gent that helped me rehang the swinging door) the pine was more stable so the oak veneer made more sense.

My son has informed me that the doors are called "Miracle Doors". They were real spiffy in the jazz age, and you were able to order them with multiple wood veneers as our door has.
