I guess it would probably work about as well as a heat gun though I bet the small plate would get instantly gummy with paint ? Perhaps older paints performed better with regards to this ?

Willa, was just thinking that same thought. I know my paint scrapers get sticky when they get hot and paint just builds up and stick to the scraper.

While it looks in pretty good conditon for its age (1920'-50's guessing by the cloth wrapped cord) there are no traces of paint anywhere on the tool or cord, vs my heat gun which has built-up gunk, smears, etc.

This may have been a new fangled thing that didn't work as well in practice as it did in theory ?

interesting but yea. the painting would all stick to it and be burning and stinking.

A good nostalgia gift for someone who's been through stripping hell.

maybe it isn't for stripping paint. If it were then why would the blade be set so low? could it be for ,,, I dont' know,, removing bark or something?

Of course if you look in the magazines and things of the 30's- 70's there were a lot of mail order goodies with flowery adds , depicting things that didn't really work. X ray glasses is probably the most common but there were many other gimmicks.

i remember one where evidently it said "Guaranteed to kill flies". then you got two little blocks of wood with a red dot on them and the instructions said put the fly between the red dots and squeeze ;-)
