Picture rail in room with a stairway

Post by Shrimpdip »

Do any of you have picture rail in the upstairs landing? The downstairs seems pretty straight forward. Take the trim from where the ceiling opens up back around to where the rail meets the wall the stairs are on. In the upstairs, what do you do with the two story wall that the stairs are against. Does the trim just go along the other three walls and dead end on the two story wall or does it go all the way around and pictures on the stairs are hung with very long cords.

Thanks for your help,

Aaron

Shrimpdip, been a while good to hear from you. From looking at vintage pictures it would seem you would end the rail at the stair well on the first floor. On the second floor you would install at the secon floor height on the large stair well wall.
Your stair well pictures would be hung off of fancy drop cords or chains of various lengths. You need to update up us, with pictures of course.

Well, since you asked for pics. :-)

The first pics are how it looks now. The woodwork is done, the ceiling is ready for stencils and the walls are almost ready for paint. Picture rail will go up after the stencils and walls are painted.

Third pic is after we had the old scellac stripped off. (Only pic I have with the plastic out of the way)

The parlor is finished. We are planning on stenciling the ceilings in the stairway also. The picture rail is from Menards. It is chair rail with the top back corner knocked off with a table saw. The picture hooks fit over it nicely. I'll start buying the picture rail for the stairway and getting it finished a little at a time so it is ready when the painting is done.

That is pretty much what we have been up to.

Shrimpdip, what a grand stair case. It looked great the way it was, can hardly waite to see it refinished. You parlour Los looks very nice, the wall paper, were did you get it from? We are looking for something similar but can never find the appropriate boarder.

Thanks!

Everything in the parlor is paint. The stencils came from MB Historic Decor.

Even the infill, it looks like a Morris paper. That's a lot of stencilling, to get all that leaf pattern on.

It took us a little while. The stencils come in layers so you put one color on, wait for it to dry, and then the next. The upper walls were two layers if I remember correctly. The ceiling boarder was three layers and the ceiling corners were 4 or 5 pieces.

Thought I’d post an update. All done with this project. Won’t be starting a new one until after Christmas.

Here's a photo of our main staircase. The picture rail is a bit below the ceiling (perhaps a foot?) and we ran the ceiling color down the wall to the top of the picture rail. The picture rail is at a consistent distance from the ceiling all around the space.
