I think I know what you're talking about - just some 4 mm particle board with very faint grout lines pressed into it and then finished to look like tile. I think I've seen it in off-white and pale green with cement grey grout lines, square 15x15 cm tiles (6x6). Looked pretty much like old tiles with sharp edges and narrow grout. We pulled a bunch of it out of the 70s kitchen but it was all small pieces and smelled musty so it's gone now. It was fixed to the wall with plain nails and finished around the edges with some kind of U-shaped white plastic channel that just clipped around the edge. The seams were just open but that was a DIY install and a poor one too.

do they make textured wallpaper in a suitable pattern?
