I listened to 100 hands, nice song, saw Phil's stove.

I went and searched out everything that was posted and gave a listen or two. I have never caught up with who makes these songs, hence I did recognize Losing my Religion.

But for the life of me I don't know how one goes from Pixies, Weezer, Killers, etc, to Mahler and Brian Eno.

Thats quite a range!

In the day I was also a fan of Sir Mix-a-lot, Blondie, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, The Orb, and The Grateful Dead.
Mahler knew how to turn up an orchestra to 11.

Back when I put the addition on the house, John Hiatt - Master of Disaster had just been released, and I spent the summer painting and doing finish carpentry to the title tune from that album - very fitting! I'm reminded of that time every time the song comes up on the iPod rotation.

Beyond that, I have a huge collection of vintage zydeco and big-band/ jazz, a decent Bob Marley collection, old Floyd/ Roger Waters, CSN, Dylan, Stones, Bowie, etc. For more current releases, I like the Felice Brothers work, Squirrel Nut Zippers (though they aren't recording any more), and my current fav, The Hot Sardines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4-XIKt-ADs Though these last two are a throw-back, of sorts, to the vintage stuff.

I frequently work professionally with this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOqNBOp9bPY He's a talented rockabilly performer in his off hours, but an excellent camera man during the day!

for me . I guess I like most everything except rap and twangy sad country music. I figure why limit myself? I like Neil young and Lou reed and a lot of the woodstock generation music even though it was a bit before my time. I refuse to buy into Itunes, My cell or ipad sound lousy and it's too hard to trade or share them. Mostly I listen to the radio but I'm loyal to no single station. I find they play a lot of the hits and never the flipside but it's just easy to turn on the radio. I never found that streaming worked well for me. Ill leave my sterio on until somethign annoys me and then switch stations. Sometimes Im happy just spinning a few 78's on my wind up phono or tuning into whatever I can find on AM. Utube used to have a lot of cool concerts but it seems the commercials got involved to such an extent that it dampens the fun. it's a good way to share a link to a song but who wants a computer going all the time? n the past 10 or even 20 years I haven;t seen the creativity or lyrics that I found really moved me but most people cling to the music they liked in their 20's
Its cool to hear what others are listening to. I used to buy a lot of music and CD's but the market changed so much and I just don't find I purchase music anymore. I think I'm the last soul with a big box of cassettes in his car ;-) I love them and often get them free ;-)

Sun Kil Moon is great to work to...Mark Kozelek builds these kind of long, repetitive melodies that you can just get into a trance with. So much of his stuff is achingly beautiful.

Pearl Jam's Yellow Ledbetter over and over until hubby threatens to punt my cell phone, lol. I have a great mix with George Ezra, Radiohead, Of Monsters & Men, Mumford, and a bunch of random stuff. I get tired of our radio station (live88.5) because of all the loud, annoying car dealer ads and repetition.

We have a lot in common. But I will add classic rock to my not fond list. How many times can one listen to Hotel California? I still have my Dad's Kenton and other Big Band 78's, as well as a vinyl collection dating from the late 50's to early 70's numbering to about 1000 pieces.

Cool stuff, I see he is playing the instrument that started this conversation.

Some of what you folks like, I could not work with, too fast paced, would make me nervous and distracted. So I agree more with the not too slow, but motivating type of music.

When I tuned into a jazz station very late one night back in 2005, I heard something totally different...I was like..."what is this music??"

Turns out it was the syndicated "Chill With Mindi Abair" radio show. So hooked was I to this relaxing yet downtempo/somewhat hypnotic jazz/with a touch of lounge/Ibizia music, that I contacted the producer when I discovered that some songs were mislabeled.

She thanked me by sending me a flash drive of the entire show library, over 1200 songs!

I am still to this day exploring what I have. Whenever I put this music on low when people are over, they will eventually say..."what is this music??".... I tell them it is music you didn't realize you were listening to until it stops.

Among others I have everything from a Nat King Cole remix, to a spooky version of "Man Of Constant Sorrow", and even a very down beat version of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love".

I will post a couple but I don't know where to begin...

I forgot to mention Bela Fleck and the Flecktones!
I got into listening to Bluegrass every afternoon on a local NPR station, but right after 9/11 they went to more news coverage and the bluegrass never came back. They moved it to their online service though, where it is 24/7.
The Stanleys, seldom scene, alison krauss are all legendary bluegrass people. It is amazing music, best enjoyed live and up close.

I think the eagles were a great band but they got way way way too much airplay to the point where we are sick of it. I agree completely with that. Not only the eagles but for some weird reason the radio stations don't want to play much variety and I do think that has driven a lot of listeners to seek more variety through other mediums.

In early days of radio. Playing phono records over the radio posed a threat to musicians. So they made a law that prevented any recorded music from being broadcast. The radio stations had studios where live musicians would set up and play over the radio. even shows like the shadow had real people making the sound effects live. I often wonder how it would have played out for musicians if that had continued. Or how well one station might do if they introduced a lot more live music and also rejected annoying commercials. The radio stations here used to have to give the artists credit by announcing their names but I guess that rule went out the window.. Oh well I can "ask siri" I guess ;-)

Now to hear live music I pretty much have to fork out a hundred bucks for a concert ticket or go to some pick up bar or casino. There really aren't a lot of popular live venues so it is quite infrequent that I hear live music. That's a shame or emerging musicians. Yea they can post on Utube but one has to know who to look for and I run out of names to search for pretty quickly. - so it's nice to hear about everyone elses favorites. - good thread !

Yes! They are fantastic. I have every album. Seen them in concert 5 times, and they are far and away the best live act I've seen. I believe they are now finished, or at least on hiatus. Bela is out with his wife Abigail Washburn doing a tour together.
