I can see how most who pull some old toilet out dont want it sitting around or the job of cleaning it, so they get trashed, yes also broken. They can probably break from frozen water if they sit outside too. I have a vintage handle on mine too. Its a waiting game to find a nice vintage one locally.
I've got a real weird one that a previous owner installed in a closet, with a triangular shaped tank. Weird but not really old and what a silly place to install it.

Yeah, mine was in the upstairs closet as well. From what I understand, it's quite common -- the original owners get older and need a toilet on every floor, and the closet is the easiest place to put it.
I'm going to enlarge my throne room closet and make it into a proper powder room with a sink.

I've seen those triangle-shaped "corner" toilets before. They went through a period of brief popularity in the late '80s/early '90s.
