I wonder if that first layer of siding was meant to be there originally. It's my understanding that Colonial houses with the clapboard siding have classic English half timbering underneath. The siding is extra insulation for New England's more severe winters.

The herringbone brick patio area looks good but the exterior retaining wall, etc. is not sympathetic, at all.

The owner /designer seems to have flamboyant taste that is not always tasteful ?

The article says that the siding was added almost 100 years after it was built. If the chinking is tight, I can't see how an inch of siding would add much to what looks like at least 5" log walls.

lol! Agreed. Restraint is the hardest thing to learn in architecture and decor.
