Uh-oh. Kitchen lights are discontinued. Ideas?

Post by eclecticcottage »

So I went to get a will call together for the Bungalow Project today. I planned on schoolhouse fixtures in the kitchen. I have them at The Cottage. I went to the aisle, saw them on display and looked for them on the shelves for the item numbers. After pacing back and forth and not finding them I figured I'd just look at the tags on the display...then...uh oh. No tags. The folks in lighting confirmed my fears. They are discontinued! ACK! That was my go to kitchen style.

So, what's everyone got for lighting? I REFUSE to do track or can/pot. If someone has them and loves them-that's cool, I'm not judging. I just can't see how it could flow with this house. But I was stuck on those and now can't seem to find something in stock at a box store (I am one of those people that needs to see things like this in person) that works.

You should buy antique fixtures and rewire them...there's plenty on ebay, etsy, and at salvage stores. You can buy the fixtures and the glass shades separately to save money. Rewiring is fun and easy. If you really want new schoolhouse fixtures, Schoolhouse Electric has really nice ones, but they are pricey.

I love this website for parts to rewire fixtures. You can also get reproduction fixtures and shades on here too much more cheaply than fancy lighting or historic house parts websites: https://www.grandbrass.com/. See: https://www.grandbrass.com/category/lig ... _fixtures/ and https://www.grandbrass.com/category/gla ... mp_shades/.

Not sure where you went shopping, but if you are looking for 'OK' lighting (not truly antique) there are a boatload of schoolhouse lights in flush, semi-flush, pendant and sconce that come up in searches at Lowe's and Home Depot. I know you are looking for the 'look' and not the real thing, so they may fit the bill.
