Hi All,
This is one of my favorite houses around. It's a little over a mile from me, along the Aqueduct Trail (which runs about 40 miles from the Croton Dam down into Manhattan) so, if you're in the area, you can take a nice stroll and snoop a bit.
Ignore, if you can, any thoughts of who would actually pay $40,000 a month to rent a house, and instead enjoy the photos - restoring this house is a life-time pet project of a noted historical preservationist, and it's magnificent.
The house was designed according to the principles espoused by Orson Squire Fowler, "a phrenologist, sexologist and amateur architect". Fowler was particularly noted for his study of phrenology, and it is said that this house, in fact, was designed as an architectural metaphor for the human skull. Curious now?

Re: Eye Candy
You're going to love this...
My brother, an old light enthusiast/restoration expert/historic preservationist, pulled an old, ornate mica shade chandelier from the scrap pile at the local scrap yard. It caught his eye as something way too ornate and beautiful to go into the hopper (I will see if he can dig up a picture). He figured it might command a few dollars, but his friend suggested it was worth more than he thought. Within a few hours it was sold. The owner asked for my brother to deliver this magnificent light.
The delivery location? the Armour-Stiner Octagon House. The buyer? Joseph Pell Lombardi.

Nope, ha.
I asked my brother the other day, "What's the nicest single residence you've ever seen?" "That one dad and I went up to in NY. Just incredible." Thats this house. Small world!

Wow. Just wow. I wouldn't want to have to upkeep it, but fancy!

The octogon house in my town pales in comparison... but anything just about would.
It is magnificent to see a house still retain so many original features.
Crestings on the shed??? now that's class.

Re: Eye Candy
Just absolutely amazing. I wouldn't want to have to keep it up either, but I guess if you can afford a house like that, you can probably afford to have someone else keep it up for you!
