I bought this first cover for a song at an antique mall...
and then a old boss mentioned she has another summer cover and a gas insert that I could have if I liked!

Re: Fireplace Covers
oooooohhh they are pretty! I recommend a graphite stove polish for them - really brings out the pattern and lasts pretty much for ever

Corsettier, great find. Don't let those three nosey social workers see them, they'll have you up for possible rust and stove black violations.

Agreed.
Next they'll be saying iron is a hazardous material and show up in tyvek suits to take them out!!
Re: Fireplace Covers
The frolicking maiden theme throughout! I also like the insert/space heater. I've had my eye out for that style; they're not easy to find intact. Would the graphite polish be appropriate for it too?

It comes down to taste, I love the look of it - looks more like bare iron than paint, kind of a metallic charcoal color. It really shows up the detail more than paint can, but even with the heat of a woodstove it lasts for years. I use it on all sorts of iron things. I even used it on the decorative cast iron base of one of my prized kerosene lamps.
Originally it would likely have had some light plating or have ben painted, but that got lost years ago. When I got this lamp it the base was quite rusty. The stove polish is a non destructive way to beautify and protect it, and to be honest I prefer it to how it probably looked originally.
