Upper management and I spent a day yesterday at a larger out door antique fair, had a nice day weather was perfect for walking the tables. Being close to Toronto prices were high, but we did manage to find a deal or two.
We scored another Eastlake display shelf.
It is actually the back board from a buffet but works wonderfully as a wall shelf.
And to start filling it we found this mounted nautilus shell, a very Victorian dust magnet, just had to have it,
It’s not one of those large ones with gold or silver mounts but is of the period. The silver mounts are plated but the shell is a real nautilus. Stand about 25cm tall (10”).
The devil is in the details, or not.

The Eastlake shelf will be useful, and looks in excellent condition. What is the story with the nautilus shell curiosity ?

Willa, mounted nautilus shells became very popular starting in the mid 1500’s Well into the mid 1800’s. With the opening up of exotic destinations in the Far East all sorts of new a wonderful items started showing up in Europe and England. Think Ming vases, exotic spices, and all sort of items never seen before. The nautilus was one of these things. The rich and titled would commission exotic mounts to display their nautilus shell. By mid Victorian times they weren’t so exotic but still popular.
The shell I found would be mid Victorian and probably were a pair at one time.

James, how could you not buy it, it certainly is different, not the common stalking leopard, now, how did a stalking leopard get associated with TV’s?
You’ll have to buy a period ‘Radiation King’ TV (a Simpson’s reference) now to properly display it.

Close James.
And remember don’t sit too close the TV, you will go blind. Is that what these TV lights were supposed to do, avoid you going blind if you sat to close?

Now if that unusual t.v. light ever needs a new home I can give you my address...
