new to site from Sandusky Ohio

Post by mmccool719 »

Hi there. Purchased a 1910 summer cottage on Lake Erie this summer. A few local builders have lovingly referred to it as a "tear down" but I beg to differ. We have spent the last 10 weeks peeling back layer after layer of tired paneling, carpeting and drop ceilings to reveal the original house and all its charm from 1910. I'd love to be able to share some pictures of what we have found under all the years of remodels. It's far from perfect and probably is, in fact, a tear down in a world where money grows on trees! The floors are slanting, the walls are curving, the 12 over 1 original windows are thick with layers of paint and you can see light come up through the floorboards upstairs. But guess what.....Lake Erie is at my front door and Sandusky Bay is at my back door, it's a weekend getaway and that is ok with me.

Tear down? Those are bad words around here ;-)

Lots of folks here have started with much worse and live in lovely homes. You are a champ for saving it from the evil development mindset. Looks to have good bones and I bet it will be a fun house for you to vacation when you're done.

I hope the neighbors that wanted a new mansion next door understand....

Welcome,

The house is not a tear down from what I can see, please see thread just started about "old house lovers vs the world".

Now that's an interesting roof line!

I bet it's not easy to keep tight with that low pitch and almost horizontal valleys!

It's a rubber roof about 5 years old! No clue if that's a good or bad thing but it certainly keeps the house dry. Though it is very UGLY!!!! :) I'd love to rebuild the roof line someday and raise it up.

Very nice and it has a ton of potential.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that bar area started life as a built-in sideboard/china cabinet.

Not sure. The backside is actually a very old wash sink for barware.....or maybe they actually washed the china here too? Either way, it was all hidden behind garbage and furniture. We were thrilled to uncover it and get it all cleaned up.
