My First House...has identity issues!

Post by Azurelle »

Hi! I'm Shana aka Azurelle...I think I'm safe to use my real name on this forum

I am in the process of buying my first home a 3300 sq. ft 5/2, pier & beam,late/folk Victorian(at least that's what I'm calling it for right now) built in 1900 with a master suite added over the dining room in the 60s. I'm hoping to close in two weeks. It needs a ton of work starting with a new roof and a complete rewiring.

But it lacks any bits and bobbles that pop into my head when I think of "Victorian" houses.

ALL of the wood trim has been painted several times. Eventually I will strip and stain/repaint...I hope. I'm still waiting to see how much of my 45k budget is going to be take up just with the roof and the electrical. Sadly I'm thinking a pretty huge chunk.

Any idea on what the original closet doors would have looked like in this room?

cause those are ugly!

I have a million and one questions for which Google sadly does not supply me answers! Can't wait to learn and/or commiserate over this most recent life choice ;-) Shana

I can't help with the identity issues....but congratulations on buying your first house! We just bought our house, and for me, half of the fun (and frustration!) is trying to figure out the changes through the years, and what it was before those changes. Buying an old home, is an adventure!!

Doors may have been 5-panel at that time period. You still have some great features, wonderful porch, dining room side lights, fire places. Others are better at determining what the original features would have looked like, but looks like a nice home!

Your soon to be new old home looks great as is. Did you check to see if there is a biscount due to the seal on the toilet being broken. :eh: Welcome to the district, most of us here highly recommend living in the home for a while before making major changes. The home will tell you what it needs. Once again welcome.

Man, that house is roomy. Look at the space you have. You are very lucky.

I know I'm super lucky on the room sizes. The smallest of the 5 bedrooms is 14x16.

 Fine house, high ceilings, tall windows. The closet probably had one hinged panel door. Looking forward to seeing more pictures as you get into the project --- welcome also!
