1880s Eastlake/Queen Anne NY

Post by lkamms »

Hello! Lived in this 1880s Eastlake/Queen Anne (?) NY located in a cozy town around Rochester, NY for ten years. House was well kept but not to modern standards when we moved in, so we've been making small gains each year to improve its beauty and utility.

A few things we've completed:

We straightened a floor in upstairs bedroom and added closet and bookshelves.
We remodeled the kitchen with granite countertops, new wood cupboards, and manufactured hardwood flooring.
We removed a useless coat closet in the pantry and replaced with a smaller but more useful repurposed shelving unit.
    We upgraded electric to 220.
We removed a tree in the backyard and then constructed a high end bluestone patio with hottub

Long way to go yet! Trying to preserve to certain historical standards is always on our mind, though we can't always afford it or know what's best. That's how this site may help!

In coming years, we hope to overcome lack of curb appeal, paucity of indoor light, and poor insulation by

    Continued landscaping in front yard
Replace or strip the front door
    Replace crumbling front steps
Straighten and replace the flooring in our small front foyer - it's sagging over 2" and has no insulation
Repaint interior walls to lighter color
Restore old windows, if that's even possible!

How and when to do things is all up in the air. Open to suggestions as we move forward with ideas and questions.

Glad to make your acquaintance here.

I love all the variations in the colors of the wood in your first photo. So beautiful.

Thanks, Mick_VT and DoorKnob...
The largely untouched wood interiors and relatively large rooms are what sold the house to us! The two story barn kinda helped!

Pardon the blur on the photos. My camera must have been smudged. Also, the front-side view photo convinced me I have to remove that burning bush. It's now gone!

:)

I'm almost sure your windows can be restored, unless they're totally rotted to the point of crumbling apart!

Even then they can be, though you might need professional help. Fortunately, we have window experts on this forum, at least two valued members who make their living from restoring old windows and will share tips, techniques and advice (and sometimes putty if you are lucky) :)

That's good to know. Who are they? We need to understand the technique before we make a plan of attack.

Jade and Sashguy are the resident experts. Many others of us (myself included) have restored our own original windows too.
