Seeking Advice on roof removal of historic Italianate home.

Post by lswindler12 »

Hi,
I am a board member for a small non-profit called the Cracker House Project. (you can learn more at facebook.com/crackerhouseproject). We own a beautiful 1860's italianate in St. Joseph, MO that was the home of Frank L. Sommer, who invented the saltine cracker in St. Joe in the 1800's. He was also instrumental in the founding of NABISCO and they use his saltine recipe to this day! The home has seen better days but we have finally gained possession of it and are commencing renovations! The walls have been re-pointed, and now we need to take off the rotting roof and supports... the only problem is we can't seem to find anyone that knows how to properly do that!

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks!

Good to have you on board. Had a look at you site, seems the roof is step two on your list. I would strongly suggest hiring a restoration architect to guid you if you have not. Are you hoping to remove, not only the roof outer sheeting but the beams and such? There are a lot of things to consider in doing this. That might be why your having issues finding a contractor.

Wish I had any advice to give (which I don't), but what an interesting project!
