We are so happy we found this amazing forum! Thank you all so much for being a part of the love for old houses. My wife and I recently purchased our first old house. An 1885 Farm House, with multiple additions. The home was one of the first in the area and the road it's on was named after the family that built the house. It has been neglected and has had many "improvements" that we feel destroyed some of its character. We have made it a priority to try to fix these errors and we hope to find a lot of help and information here because I know we will need it!
Thanks!

Here are some photos! As you can see much of the original detail of the home has been covered up or torn out unfortunately. We would love to bring it back!

One of the largest tasks we have done so far was to replace the original roof. Unfortunately the original chimneys had been so badly cared for that they could literally be pushed off of the roof. We had them removed and faux chimneys put in their place. These will get wrapped in a thin antique brick veneer. Not ideal but asleast we still have the look of the chimney. The contractor just wanted to remove them completely and roof over the holes but we said no way!

We also had to have the entire foundation rebuilt on the West side of the house. The company that did did the work did a case study on how the work was completed. The original stacked stone had settled and shifted so much that the house had sank about 6" on that side.

We also have 5.5 acres of land which was a huge bonus when we found the house!

Nice! We are planning on putting a similar type of steel roof on our house as well. Love it! That's great that it's on a nice parcel of land, too. Thanks for sharing!

Cartersfixerupper, welcome to The District, nice to see the home has found supportive people to maintain the integrity of the old girl. Many homes aren't so fortunate. I would suggest living in the home for a while before doing any major reworking. Your priorities will change over time. You have the two biggest issues in old homes handled and under control, the foundation and roof. Even if you just live and enjoy, the home will now stand another hundred plus years.

Thank you both very much! We are very excited to start and continue this journey. We know that it will be long and at times very difficult but we are committed to doing things right!
I hope to be able to continue posting updates on our progress. Is this the best place for that?
Thanks again!
