Re: turpentine

I'm with 1918, I live in it daily, but it appears we'll have to go all the way & feel the pain before we 'get it'. These things creep, and most always to 'terminal' conditions. More regulation always leads to a point where the costs outstrip the benefits - a phenomena of government thru all ages...

Re: turpentine

I would've stained the cedar, 2 coats, and called it good. Oh well. Let us know how it holds up! The paints you certainly can use to topcoat your sashes, but the need for an oil prime is still there. Acrylics won't penetrate to the degree you want, and since it is SO much work to pull the glass etc....

Re: Infrared Paint Strippers

That's the truth. Most of them wouldn't know lead from brass. Kind of like the people coming up with unachievable vehicle emission standards, yet none of them have a clue how an internal combustion engine works. Bureaucrats at their best (or worst, depending on how you look at it). And I can just a...

Re: Infrared Paint Strippers

"use of power tools without high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) exhaust control (to collect dust generated) are prohibited.„" ... trying to figure out how I connect my sawzall to my dust vac. At some point reality must suck for people who write this stuff, then try to adhere to it. Oh ...

Re: Window repair - which surfaces do not get painted? (plus top sash question)

The regular 3M window kit stuff has been great here, on their 5th winter now, only the 1 taken out by the cat a couple of years ago. I should be fair...coyotes or a fox got that cat (sniff sniff), and the other one I have isn't interested, so that might have continued. Maybe after Ken's cat gets use...

Re: Window repair - which surfaces do not get painted? (plus top sash question)

Well worth a try, Willa! Yeah, my cat took a swipe at one of mine, had to put packing tape on it til I could replace it. Maybe you could scare them off somehow? It doesn't mess with them anymore, all I did was "hiss" a lot at it.

Re: Window repair - which surfaces do not get painted? (plus top sash question)

Glad you got them going, Ken! I didn't use 2 layers of film either; doesn't seem to be necessary. My house is tight & draft-free! 50mph wind here regularly in winter, and no problems. Make sure to use the drywall screws or they will POP OUT in a good wind. I found that if you use 5/8" backe...

Re: Infrared Paint Strippers

To remove any confusion. Your gov't at work, from the EPA's learned mouth. It's good enough for OSHA, too - and these bureaucracies us an EXCESS of caution: "Work Practice Requirements„ Renovators must use work-area containment to prevent dust and debris from leaving the work area. „ Certain wo...

Re: Infrared Paint Strippers

I don't know how hot the infrared units get, probably in the specifications. If you stay below 1100F, you are safe, according to the EPA and all the state info I've read. The lead won't gassify below that. I use a heat gun on the 'low' setting, which is around 700. I still wear a respirator often an...

Re: Crawlspace - vent or seal?

Yes, Willa, but the concept (the science behind the work) is the same everywhere. It just appears that it's difficult to understand for many, many people. I'm certainly not telling him to seal - only that you either have to do as complete a job at it as humanly possible, or not at all. That rule is ...
