I'm Back--and I Need Ideas for Guest Bath for 1884 Farmhouse

Hey, folks! It's been a long time since I've been active on here, and I've missed staying in touch with y'all. The last year has been particularly rough in my corner of the world, so there hasn't been much going on at the farmhouse or my blog. My "second mom", whom I cared for during the p...

Re: Vent! Flipper Hell!

Southernlady, Good for you, keeping these elected people on thier toes. You can bet there was some money being made somewhere when the decision to tear down was made. I was actually asked by several town business owners to run for city council with a platform of protecting our historical integrity....

Re: How much of a lean is okay?

If your inspectors say it's ok, it's ok. As has already been stated, most old houses have a lean to them. My house is approximately 135 years old, and the front end is rediculously slanted. As just an example, the front wall of my bedroom is about 2" off from the floor to the ceiling. The door ...

Re: cool free pump organ

Those things can be quite fussy... the bellows were often leather, and they are often cracked and can't hold air. A friend of mine got one and planned to sell it for $500, if I remember correctly. I checked it out, but most of the stops didn't work. They're lovely pieces, and they can be fixed to wo...

My blood pressure doesn't often go up, but this is one of the things that causes it! Have y'all noticed that new HGTV show? Something-or-other Restoration ?! Restoration my eye!!! That brother-sister combo rips out all the parts that should be there to make it modern. I'm not a cusser, but I have sm...

Re: You Might Be an Old Home Owner if...

...a minor earthquake hits your area late at night, causing the house to shake, but you're so caught up in doing to wall stenciling and listening to old-time bluegrass you think it's just the house shaking to a big truck driving by (until you see the news in the morning). https://earthquake.usgs.gov...

Re: Original tile work restoration

I have enjoyed these pictures of your beautiful bathroom. Thank you for sharing them! I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your restoration. If you are looking to remove stains from the grout, I wonder how hydrogen peroxide would work for you, before you try the bleach. I had hex tile put down ...

Re: Hurricane Florence

We made it through! Prayers were answered, and the storm drastically weakened compared to what was expected. The chimney made it, although some good-sized branches didn't. I had some minor flooding, but nothing too serious. Nothing like the folks out in the eastern part of the state are experiencing...
