Re: Some thing interesting
Thanks for the link. Many interesting engravings in that book. In addition to the Renaissance, Gothic, Tudor, and Norman revivals, by the 1880s, there was getting to be a renewed interest in Neoclassicism and its elements and that's apparent from some of the engravings. It seems like Neoclassical de...

Re: Replacing porch column bases with vented composite?
One thing I forgot to ask - was Willy Wonka the previous owner of your house?

Re: Replacing porch column bases with vented composite?
In addition to figuring out what to replace it with, one key element is to figure out what caused the damage in the first place. From looking at the pictures, it looks like most of the damage came from water pouring from above, such as drainage off a roof that either had clogged or improperly fitted...

Re: Lumber "shortage"
Prices are starting to dip a little around here, though they've still got a long way to go before they return to normal, or at least what was pre-pandemic normal. All of the local lumber yards around here have inventory and from what I can see, not much of it is moving. Hopefully if it sits long eno...

I also recall something about there's only so much one can do to protect a home against things like being demolished to make way for a McMansion or such. It's up to the law to uphold the few places that allow for such protections, and it's not very often when money skirts that law that the damage c...

Re: So...it has come to this.
I had no appreciation for windows until we bought our house where all (36!) of the wood windows were lovingly taken care of for most of this house's life. The last two owners I don't think did much for them, and they definitely need work now. But all in all they're in great shape. Still, they're in...

Big Tech is another one. I was just a kid when it happened, but I remember the anti-trust litigation that occurred with the Bell Telephone Co. and the resulting "Baby Bells" that they were all broken up into. I also remember reading about the Standard Oil company and its dissolvement in the 1910s as...

Re: Lumber "shortage"
There is no shortage. This is a pure lie by the elites (think Koch brothers, whom own Georgia Pacific). Exactly. Which is why I put the original title in quotes. Just like the supposed oil shortage in part of the Great Recession. Nobody seemed to notice all the heavily laden tankers low in the wate...

Re: Spot Repair Water Damage in Ceiling
Just to make sure I'm understanding the question correctly, you're asking if the remaining acoustic tiles can be taken down, the wood strips they were attached to kept, and new tiles put up? If that's the case, it shouldn't be a problem as long as the wood didn't warp. If it did, cut out the warped ...

Southbend, your students lamp was definitely born as an electric. Most oil students lamps had a cased glass shade, often seen in green. The cased glass would reflect some of the light downward giving a bit of a brighter light over the book, the coloured casing glass would diffuse the light coming o...
