Re: 1860 farmhouse - Hello!

Hi senegal_jen! I just ordered those books, and I'm excited to read them. I agree about farmhouses. I looked at many before choosing this one, and all of them were quite remuddled, which makes sense with how people used them. So much of the history got thrown out in my house, but I have to admit muc...

Re: Thicker baseboards and how to remove tar paper

MD1850Farmer, this is hugely helpful...I don't suppose you have any pictures of what your trims look like? Sanders can't be used on tar paper because it immediately gums up the sander. It's sticky stuff. Sanding can only happen once most of the tar paper is off. This has been a crazy week of wallpap...

Re: 1860 farmhouse - Hello!

Beautiful doors! This is also extremely helpful. I was contemplating how I was going to do the trim on those doors that are so close together. I read that you can design the trim to bleed into the trim of the adjacent door. Some of the other trim in my house (not original) resembles the style in you...

Re: Thicker baseboards and how to remove tar paper

I am going to try these suggestions. This is so helpful. Thank you! I will report back what works best. The door trim has to be replaced too. The wood floors are 2 inches below the most recent floors, so there's also big gaps between the bottom of the door trim and the wood floor. It's not a tragedy...

Re: Thicker baseboards and how to remove tar paper

Ahh, that makes sense! I wouldn't say the doors are messed up, but they are certainly nothing special. It looks like basic door trim from home depot. Since I'm painting and doing new baseboards, I think I should change them out too. I don't have to rush with it...they can remain off, and it won't pr...

Thicker baseboards and how to remove tar paper

https://c4.staticflickr.com/4/3692/19778356622_9e2eb79a50_k.jpg I am new to the forum and am in the middle of restoring the original floors of my 1860 farmhouse. The current baseboards/trim are not original and not worth saving, and they are not thick enough to cover the gaps between the original f...

Re: 1860 farmhouse - Hello!

Thanks much! I completely agree about freestanding antiques for the kitchen. I am not sure if the current location for the kitchen is even where the original kitchen was...I think probably not. There was a ton of mismatched built-ins and an island that were not in great condition. I removed them all...

Re: 1860 farmhouse - Hello!

Thanks for the welcome! I hope I can find some older photos! I heard it has some interesting history. The one room sticking out the back is a new addition. The rest of the single story part looks to be original to the house. There's a few decades of quick fix renovations. It takes some of the pressu...

1860 farmhouse - Hello!

I am the excited new owner of an 1860 farmhouse on 5 acres. It was originally an apple orchard, and there's still some of the original apple trees out in my woods. Like so many old homes around here, this one was advertised as a temporary solution while you build your "dream home" on anoth...
