Re: Porch Decking wood species

Thanks for sharing your choice to use pine t&g. It does seem to be one of the less expensive options. I failed to mention the pine decking available locally is thin - 3/4" or less (?). The lumber store manager even mentioned it would twist and warp unless it is installed immediately. I inte...

Porch Decking wood species

After surrendering to "we are in over our heads" with projects, we hired a contractor to tackle some of the bigger exterior repairs. I admit it is nice to see so much progress in a single day, although mostly still demo at this stage. He wants to start from the ground up, so first project ...

Re: Old pictures of your house?

Yes we've got one -- sorry for the poor quality Found this picture at the local library in the town's historical section. (An original Carnegie Library built in 1909) Poor photo looks to have been copied and copied again too many times, I'm hoping to obtain a better quality print from the county his...

Re: Guess the Estimate

I'll take a stab at this... $6000. Canadian ? We need some similar jobs done at our house - the quotes are much higher than I expected for this little one horse town. For example; $1500. each to rehab a double hung 1/1 window (some wood repair, but excludes glass, pulleys etc.) Gee, I can get new &q...

Re: Has anyone bought an abandoned property?

Amen Phil. Couldn't have said it better.

We were big on recycling everything in New Mexico - trash bin had hardly anything in it and the recycle bin was full every cycle. Now I've moved to the sticks in Texas - they don't do much recycling here :crying-yellow:

It has been a huge adjustment for us.

Re: Setbacks...

Congratulations on the quick sale!!

And my sympathies as well. I know how saddened you are - your heart & soul were in Cupola Art from the beginning.

Looking forward to hearing about your next dream / plan. It's sure to be a grand one!

It sure is Phil! Yes, the railing will be repainted.

It has 100 years of paint. Some layers were prepped well and others not so much. Lots of alligatoring - just time to take it down to wood & start anew.

Sure wish I worked faster. :)

Re: What I did at my house today...

We finished scraping every square inch of the east section of porch railing! Used a combination of heat gun, ABR citrus stripper and carbide scrapers/elbow grease. What a tedious task but so rewarding - the wood is beautiful! IMG_2652.JPG Too bad these 31 balusters only equal 25% of the total on the...

Re: What I did at my house today...

Lily - I think you have found portable wallpaper table legs?!? Here is a pair I bought at a garage sale a few years ago. The seller didn't know what they were and neither did I, so we settled on $1. When I got home, a little internet sleuthing solved the mystery. IMG_2651.JPG Add a modest piece of ...

Re: Fix Dark Spots on Woodwork?

Corsetiere, your newel post turned out beautiful. Bravo! I know about those "blemishes" that only we notice and how they stand out like a beacon. Sure hope the scratch will fade from your daily sight and you can relish in your overall result. Fantastic strip & refinish job. I too am go...
