Re: No original windows - what to do?

Hi. Welcome to the HD. Hmm, the windows are a dilemma. If it was me, I would search Craigslist, ReStores, etc. for antique windows that are the correct size. Old wood sash windows can be reglazed, have the joints tightened up, and be otherwise fixed. There are also many that are in great shape that ...

Re: Doorknobs- old to new to old again

Sheesh, you can buy an antique porcelain doorknob on Ebay with a post and the original set screws for about $ 20.00 before shipping, less per piece if you buy a lot that has some duds, more if you want perfect with no dings or paint splatter. Really not worth fighting some restoration battle outside...

Re: Doorknobs- old to new to old again

Honestly - for the tinkering misery that would need to ensue - I would just look for a different antique doorknob that has the correct set screws and post. You could save the screwless doorknob - and once you have a couple more could use them for a crafty purpose like a DIY hanger thing for hats or ...

The better floor is a huge improvement. It looks nice with the warm wall color, too.

Re: Doorknobs- old to new to old again

My experience with antique doorknobs is that the set screws are unique to the manufacturer. I could not find anything at the hardware store or antique salvage place that was the correct size or thread. In Canada there are the imperial AND metric sizes. I could not find anything that fit - neither ha...

Re: Happy Valentines Day , everyone !

I know a plumber who, I know from experience, has good (not "fantasy") skills. He has a calm, laid-back, respectful personality. He took me by surprise when he recently announced that he is done taking on jobs for residential work and will only do commercial. He's fed up dealing with diff...

Re: 1920s kitchen cabinets

I am buying two windows that a homeowner took out of his 1920s house to add a door. They were taken out intact, and include the sash weights and everything! I am thrilled, because I have two windows in the closed-in porch that aren't original. They're crappy windows; won't stay open, can't take the...
