Re: When is a floor too far gone?
Oh yes there is a sub floor and the tongue and groove flooring over that - and I believe that the worst of it is in just one area near one particular wall with the most slope. Still - you give weight to the argument that I should just do some creative fix for now and save $$$ for replacing the wood....

When is a floor too far gone?
Have these old fir floors upstairs that was sanded before my time by someone who took way too much off in some areas (going thru the tongue and groove in 2 places). I think what happened is due to the dip and sag in the floor especially on one side of the house the sander just plowed into the wood w...

Re: Taking down the chimney...
Just for my information - can a chimney be used for a pellet or wood stove? We removed the part of the chimney above the roofline when the roof was re-done, the rest of it is still there - have thought now and again about removing the rest of it but now thinking it could come in handy and be in a go...

Re: What to do about condensation in bathroom??
Have a tiny bathroom with shower in the downstairs apartment that used to get moldy - not anymore! Just some slight peeling of paint but that's it. We didn't open up the ceiling - dropped down the ceiling instead to accommodate fan and covered with beadboard - looks nice. (since ceiling was so tall ...

Re: Preparing trim and windows for painting
EEK! I'm getting PTSD looking at that window Seriously - Im just finishing up the last of my window restoration, some which looked just like yours - it's something that's very labor intensive but very do-able by the average homeowner and you get the satisfaction of esthetic and functioning windows t...

Re: 1910 House
Greetings! Could you provide more detail about the reddish stain over the fir floor in the upstairs room (one with the window seat) - what brand, shade, how exactly to apply. I am at the stage where I will have to decide whether to stain or not stain - have that same wild streaky fir on my floors wh...

Re: Abandoning Old House Web...
I don’t think of it as bailing out or turning my back on anything, its more like I’m taking a positive step to put my time and energy into a much better forum. I love how you have it set up and the how-to section is fabulous and is already taking shape as a great resource for renovators– that’s wher...

Re: Locating wood mouldings
Hello! even if you are not painting, I think Id still clamp & glue back on the broken pieces (if any), fill the holes, etc and then use artist colors to get exact match of the wood tone. Once you get final finish - shellac, poly or whatever, you're not going to see any of the repairs unless you ...
