Re: New (old) piece for the kitchen...
I love it , it reminds me of a train tunnel we have some here cut through the rock with that same shape and it just looks so heavy like part of a locomotive - or something. It would be cool to build a brick fireplace with a curved top to match it.

anyone tried sandblasting for paint removal?
I have quite a bit of white oil based paint to remove. Casings and baseboards mainly. I have been thinking it over so much lately. I have in the past replaced some bits with new wood which looks ok but fiinding historically correct ( long, preferably edge grained knotless fir) wood is expensive. the...

cool find
I was driving along yesterday and spotted a picture frame that someone had put out on the boulevard (up for grabs) circled around to check it out and found it is metal! it looks like a picture frame, I think it is copper plated, has a lot of patina but no dents. I remember some old houses having a g...

On the inside I have paint over wallpaper over paint over more paint and if I get down to the original paint it is water soluble ( calcimine) paint, also if it is like the other rooms many hairline cracks through...

Re: Ideas for replicating trim?
I have a bunch of painted casings like that but I am near vancouver BC probably too far for it to be practical to ship. not sure how old it is. If you have a piece of casing to use as a pattern , give him that to work from or do it yourself. if you have a router table and can find a knife to grind, ...

Re: The case of the missing doorbell
the transformer could be inside an electrical box,or attached to the outside of a box some of them are made to install that way. one could measure across the button to see if there is any power there, should be some power, maybe 12 to 14 VAC. There isn't anything too expensive , just the bell, the w...

Re: painting over wallpaper.....
I had one room with wallpaper and I rented the steamer, that made the paper come off pretty easily actually and I thought I was getting somewhere. Then I found calcimine paint and it took many hours to wash all the paint off with hot water, I got all I could. then all the fine cracks in the plaster....

if you want it lighter you might try wood bleach , which is oxalic acid. often with old Fir and perhaps oak and others, near any metal, like nails, you will see black marks. The black isn't rust, it is a stain created by the tannins in the wood reacting with iron. wood bleach will lighten the wood, ...
