Re: Jeld-Wen Auralast wood windows?

Willa, that's what I will do! I ordered the linseed putty yesterday and read up on 'blopentine' today. I have no idea how much putty is needed for 7 double hungs, but I ordered the 2kg. Can get more if necessary. As a side note, Dap has a corner on the market in my city. It is the only window putty ...

Re: Jeld-Wen Auralast wood windows?

I'm in Ontario, and while I am aware of municipal building codes, which vary slightly, I am unaware of any Canadian building codes which prohibit the use of single pane windows. Ask whoever told you this to cite specifically where this is stated. Vintage/antique sash or casement window + properly f...

Re: Jeld-Wen Auralast wood windows?

Phil, I'm wondering whether you have any experience with true wood windows from any of the small BC firms in your area? Costs and quality, for example.

Jeld-Wen Auralast wood windows?

I am getting an addition on my 1912 foursquare. I decided on Loewen windows from Manitoba, but my builder tells me that I'll be unhappy with the pane size, in that that the glass area will be small in comparison to the wood parts and I won't get as much light as I am getting on the original part of ...

Re: "Weeds"

I laugh because I bought a Joe Pye weed last year for my mother and worked hard to keep it healthy. She remembered the plant from the family homestead. Not a weed for us!

Cold air returns in balloon framed house

I'm trying to get my basement and attic sealed and insulated. My house is balloon framed. It has always been colder in winter/hotter in summer upstairs, with reduced air flow coming from the vents up there, worse on one side of the house than the other. I've been sealing the ducting, will be insulat...

Re: Sandstone Foundation

Follow up - I am trying to sort out a recipe for mortar and parging. This is the clearest explanation I have found regarding the types of pre-mixed mortar available: (m) Type M — The strongest (Highest PSI @ 2500) of the group, this type is most commonly used for load bearing walls and below grade a...

Re: Sandstone Foundation

Kashka-Kat, I had a long answer drafted and lost it. The short answer, as far as I can tell (and I'm no mason by any means), is that the mortar and parging protect the blocks by acting as a sacrifice to water and salts - see m So, parging is simply something for water and salt to leach into, away fr...

Re: Boomtown revival

Thanks Diane!
As for following my blog, I'm a novice at blogging and don't know how to set that up. I'll check into it and post if there's that option.
