Re: Circa 1884 McCuiston House

A great little story from your country’s troubled past. Maybe Southernlady those still in the North don’t speak of there southern cousins either. Re reading your blog, your door bell I think should be mounted side ways. To my eye it looks a bit odd to have the overhang top and bottom of the door pa...

Re: Circa 1884 McCuiston House

Southernlady, nice to see the progress, great work on the door, nice eastlake hardware and in the correct location lower on the door. Not up on American iconography but wouldn’t an eagle and shield make you a Yankees rather than a southern belle? Can’t tell you any thing on your blanket, other than...

Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.

I love it! I hope to make my own screens in the next year or two. I've currently got modern aluminum storm/screen inserts on most of the windows of my house, and I strongly dislike them. some trap in moisture, and only one works properly the rest of them aren't tight like they should be so I have wa...

Re: Got a Before & After to share? Let's see 'em!

I don't think I've posted about this here yet, but the front door exterior is now restored! I wrote about it on my blog, so I will spare you the details, but if you want to see how it all came about, just click https://mccuistonhouse.com/1880s-front-door-restoration/ . https://i1.wp.com/mccuistonhou...

Re: what do we need to know about roof flashings?

My friend, I have no roofing advice, but I am not sure you really want to take that job on by yourself. My grandpa was a contractor in addition to being a farmer. Even though he was a professional, he never took on a roofing project by himself. He always had help. Try calling the roofer back and ask...

Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.

Gothic, it's gorgeous!!! I have a question about your Elmira stove. Do y'all like it? Does it cook the same as compared to a "regular" stove/oven? A gas Elmira stove came up at an estate auction about three years ago, and I didn't realize that's what it was until after the fact. I believe ...

Re: Circa 1884 McCuiston House

My sister and I took our annual vacation to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in October, where I picked up a few really nice pieces that aren't as likely to be found in North Carolina. I grabbed up some really nice stoneware crocks, matching candelabras (marble and brass) for the parlor mantle, and t...

Re: Circa 1884 McCuiston House

Hey, folks! I can't believe it's been three months since I've checked in to give an update. It's been a pretty busy three months for me. Here's some of the newest progress at the ca. 1884 McCuiston House: Ever since I was given a copy of the original front of the house before the 1940s remodel, I ha...

Re: Circa 1884 McCuiston House

I haven't been updating here as much as I've been working on my blog, but here's the kitchen porch post now in place: https://i2.wp.com/mccuistonhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/FallPorchStoop.jpg?resize=471%2C592 This is the porch post I got for free when I purchased the bookcases/china cabinet...

Re: Music Thread

Fast-paced old-time bluegrass is my usual motivation music, although I also like to add some upbeat classic '50s/'60s music or doo-op once in a while.

Here's also a good one for stripping paint with a heat gun. I get a good rhythm. :D
