Re: What's happening in your garden?

Just wanted to post this pic I luckily snapped just in time before the critter scurried and hid further inside the columbine. Thanks again, James! I'm so glad it's doing well. The Iris you gave us is budding, but no flowers yet. The one in the back is very unhappy and isn't even leaving much, and I ...

Re: What's happening in your garden?

Last year I had this fork thing to pull dandelions. I think I threw it out accidentally. now I try to buy one and the stuff in the building store looks like junk. maybe I can make my own. Here's something you can do until you find yours or find a decent one to get. When I was a kid, my grandfather ...

Re: Lumber "shortage"

Another shortage related discovery recently...our neighbor to the east's wood stockade fence is in bad shape. She had a cousin come twice to try to shore it up, but it's become evident that it's rotted in all the wrong places (and it is old and was never treated even when the former homeowner was th...

Re: What's happening in your garden?

Lily, I somehow missed this post of yours, so my response is more leisurely than usual. I love the flavors of Thai cuisine; in fact, I stocked up on Thai curry paste before leaving Connecticut. The calamondin will be put to use in the traditional way as a wedge on the plate to squeeze for brighteni...

Re: Baby steps towards the future gardens of Beebe

A good rule of thumb is that variegated plants take some shade, preferably in the afternoon. The variegated E. fortunei cultivars are not invasive, but keep an eye on it for reversions to the solid green form, which is a common occurrence. The green is much more vigorous (more chlorophyll) and will...

Re: Weather stripping exterior storm windows?

I was trying to remember if this has come up for exterior storms, but can't remember. There is a thread here on this forum about using spring bronze weatherstipping for the windows themselves: Bronze Window Weather stripping . Jade's response (she's a professional wood window gal that is a member he...

{snip}Here's the other types of fixtures on both floors of the house. Have a feeling at least 2 of them aren't original for sure. The one labeled Hall is the area at the top of the stairs that the rooms open into; 5 of those lights. Thank you for the additional images. The dining globes, bath and k...

*scribbles note to look up later* I will look into that. Thanks!

Re: 1904 Queen Anne - Frank Eby House - South Bend, IN - 3rd year in

Oh, one other question is that a heritage designation plaque I see on the front steps? That would be a plaque for a local historic landmark in my county. The street is on the national registry then with my house/carriage house as a contributing property. Nothing else worth pursuing then right? My u...

Re: What I did at my house today...

I love this conversation! I never knew the bit about draft tubes and oil leakage, but it makes total sense. One suggestion I would make when it comes to pouring your own cement for the driveway sections: use exposed aggregate. Find a mix that incorporates small (1/4") river stones. The process seem...
