Re: Dealing with clapboard - separating corners
Off the top of my head, I don't think I've ever seen *original* mitered wood clapboard corners. If I did, it didn't stick with me. I think, for a long-term addressing-of-the-issue, I'd remove, via circular saw, the mitered pieces and install corner boards throughout. But I have a preference for well...

Re: Bucking The Trend On Long Island, NY
We've had the railing hight discussion here in the District on several occasions. I believe the general feeling of the community has come down to live with the code, design around the code or make your restoration meet code in the short term, allowing for returning original feature in the future lo...

Re: What architectural style is this?
Thanks! I don't think it's a dogtrot. It's been a number of years since I've been inside of it (I looked at it when it was for sale about 10 years ago) and I think there are stairs there (inside the door)... One shouldn't assume all that's there now is original. If this house was originally built w...

... like your study on the tower and the projection of the shadow it would cast in the different seasons. If I had an issue with modern Victorians I think it would be in the building codes. ...Another code compromise I noticed is the railing height. To meet code it becomes a bit too noticeable in t...

Re: Old House Sites
Just wondering - has anyone ever actually went and looked at the old homes that are for sale on the sites - like CIRCA Old Houses, or Old Home Dreams? Kind of. There have been listings of homes I know (been in) prior to their listing on these sites. But we mostly have used both sites for: 1) decora...

Re: Old house lovers vs. the world
I don't have a direction in mind, for this thread... [redacted text] 1) As old house lovers, we're kind of a niche market , unfortunately. A lot of the things we value in old houses often hurt their resale value to the general population. (one could say that HGTV is largely to blame, but not comple...

Re: Old Appliances (was "When chatting with strangers...")
No one has stated any reservations about our 1953 Chambers model-C style-61 in "Pastel Yellow" gas stove. Chamber Stove Models All we had to do is have is shipped from it's original home in Chappaqua, NY to NYC, for cleaning, re-chroming of the racks and griddle, and installation of safety...

Re: Bucking The Trend On Long Island, NY
Thank you for the "Welcomes". I've come to hesitate calling attention to my current home, on Old House forums, because of its nature. Unfortunately, there are no dedicated "New Old House" forums, or section of a Old House forum, where people like my wife and I can gather without ...

Bucking The Trend On Long Island, NY
My early childhood was spent living in a 1890's folk Victorian farmhouse (razed in 1976), just like this one: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/395894623465722395/ Then we lived in this 1901 "gabled foursquare" (back when it looked much nicer). https://gyazo.com/02d9052df79c253c563b46660bb1370...
