Re: Old houses and power outages
My house being old doesnt directly help me out here - the original spring dried up in the 1970s and was replaced with a drilled well, which needs electricity - though we do live only twenty feet from a river if we needed water for the necessarium. We heat primarily with wood, that helps thought the ...

Re: Advice for Flagstone Stoop
personally I might be inclined to get rid of the concrete then put down a hard pack and sand base which will allow gentle movement through freeze and thaw cycles. It will also remove any adhesion woes down the road. If you stick with the concrete others can likely advise best on the type of mortar, ...

Re: So I went to a tax foreclosure sale ..........
Want to buy them? Yes i will be replacing them. BUT the replacements will have a grill in them as well to resemble those. Although it may be a picture window flanked by a double hung on both sides. As others have said - its a waste of money to replace them, but it may save you some time in the shor...

Re: New Metal Roof - Opinions Please!
chances are the color will have faded a little even if you could get exactly the same roofing. I think your husband is right that it will be ok to have two different shades, given the distance between the roofs. However I find myself taking a different angle when I look at this. I think that the sla...

Re: Re-glazing windows
All of this window talk is excellent and timely for me. Thank you all for talking about it so much and sharing your tips. I wanted to mention that there is a glass shop where I live that sells wavy glass as well as modern glass. They buy it from buildings that are being torn down. If anyone is inte...

I'd love to know how price compares on those to other forms of shingle / metal roofs, as I am tempted myself. Our place had wood shakes for the first 90 years or so of its life

How is the siding in the way, does it overlap the window casing in some way?

Re: A New Record
I pulled out two of the (thankfully very few) modern replacement windows we have. On both the new window had been substantially different in size to the original. It was a fun project making up a complete window from scratch (well I reused some salvage sashes, but the rest I built), and then fitting...
