Re: Architectural Salvage Road Trip!

Old Good Things national warehouse is in Scranton, PA. You can wander through it all you want. If it isn't in there, or outside, it doesn't exist.

Re: Restoring 100 yr old internal doors

From your pictures, the doors look like two different woods to me. The lower one looks like a better quality wood than the upper. I'm guessing the upper one is fir rails and styles and rotary cut pine plywood panels. The lower door seems to be a wood of tighter grain and possible plain sliced plywoo...

Re: Morons and their Work

I don't work in houses anymore but I do save all the iron from Uncle Joe's fixes on furniture. I've got quite a few large coffee cans filled with nails, screws, and brackets I've taken out of furniture that didn't belong and didn't do the job (Uncle Joe's fix). I know, why do I save these things? It...

Re: Door repair how to help

Hope you grandfather didn't work on the previous major upgrade. The walls to the tanks collapsed and the sewage all went into the river. They are rebuilding it now and the sewage still isn't 100% clean. I don't have a big fancy lathe since I don't do a lot of turning, just repairs and replacements. ...

Re: Door repair how to help

Well, tools aside, I would make the plug on a lathe. Maybe you could find someone that would do it for cheap and get a tight fit. As far as the door on the stairs. We have a door on our stairway, and I would never remove it. It provides a way of controlling the heat (and a/c) so it is more balanced ...

Re: Door repair how to help

I'm sorry for making it sound so easy. I forget that most people don't have all the tools, equipment, and experience necessary for custom work. So I'm thinking the deadbolt hole would be repaired somewhat easily with a hole saw (to cut a "plug"), wood glue and filler. Yep. Finding a hole s...

Re: Door repair how to help

I think they are all repairable. If mine, that's what I would do. The one with the top rail damages could be replaced with new. An exact color match is not required since rails, styles, and panels probably didn't match originally. They are likely shellac so the finish is easy to repair. The dead bol...

Re: More fixer upper furniture!

I use the West System Epoxy. #'s 105, 206, 403. I get it from m . I recommended it to an estate manager who used it on portico gallery rails exposed to the weather and he was very happy with the results. The quantity may be more than you want to buy. If you don't want to buy this much, just get a tw...
