What is the function of the push-pin looking things ? My window does not have them.

Re: Old House Museums

Willa, we drove up to the Annandale home a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is wow. We came back re inspired. Glad you had a look ! There's a LOT to take in at that house. I found some of the paint combinations very inspiring, others off-putting. It was an excellent value for the $ 6.00 admission...

If you make a field trip be sure to tell us every last detail.

It seems like an incredible opportunity.

I also have these “pocket windows“ in the main living space - in the room with the fireplace. I believe it was perhaps just a feature of the house.

I have a pocket window in the stairwell. I had never encountered one before. Interesting that you have several.

Small Steam Generator

This would be great for making a steambox for repiaring sash windows. I don't know if it gets as hot as the professional clothing steamers that are usually recommended, though ? https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/power-tools/110936-earlex-steam-generator?utm_source=200131-CA-EN&utm_mediu...

Re: With what would you replace this marble floor?

We definitely have a late 1950s kitchen. I believe the cabinets were originally natural birch color, and the sill of the enlarged window is pink Tennessee Marble, which is a hint of what the color scheme might have been back then. We have since painted the cabinets a single color and changed out th...

Re: Ever get discouraged?

But I don't think either of us were ready for the actual process, particularly my partner. We weren't ready for difficult contractors, subpar work, work on one project damaging work that was just completed, cost overruns, roof leaks, recurring leaks, etc, and this was just in trying the maintain an...

Re: With what would you replace this marble floor?

I suppose it depends on your limitations for care, if that makes sense ? A good quality hardwood would be fine. Traditionally, the kitchen floor in a finer 1920ish house could have also been linoleum (meaning: actual linoleum - made from powdered cork and pigment) or tile. Linoleum sheeting is envir...

Re: Survey: Should I paint the bricks around my stove insert?

There are high heat paints for things like stoves and barbecues. As far as I know it is usually only available in black. I would paint the bricks with that - if they get hot when you are having a fire. If they only get moderately warm then I would get a paint for masonry that closely matches the sla...

Re: c 1815-early 1820s Baltimore sofa

I'll probably keep this upholstery. I have two other 1820s sofas, both Philadelphia pieces, that need upholstery work a lot more than this one. There's a gentleman in his 80s a couple of miles from here who does phenomenal work who I hope to get to do those pieces. I just hope he isn't planning on ...
