Before and after 10 years
We have been in our house for 11 years now, at first on a lease and then purchased it. It was sad when we bought it, all the original trim and kitchen cabinets were painted badly, old bathroom was disgusting, the yard was all weeds, porch was sinking making a frown, exterior paint was peeling, drive...

Very funny Olson! We creak, the floors squeak.

Re: Bats out of the belfry, well at least one
I squirted water on our bat, which kept him from flying. Then I just scooped him up and took him outside. My mother, the naturalist, was so proud!

Re: How to fix squeaks in floor with no subfloor?
Thanks for the replies. No rusty nails - this is Colorado so "dry" is the usual weather forecast. Sounds to me like sistering something is the easiest plan. We are having our favorite structural engineer come out to talk about finishing the basement and will talk to him about the floors to...

Re: How to fix squeaks in floor with no subfloor?
Thanks for the replies. These are not quiet squeaks, they are loud and almost every board squeaks along the path. I am also worried that this is weakening the floor boards. I have nailed some, didn't seem to help even though I hit the joists. I will see what kind of screws I might be able to use tha...

How to fix squeaks in floor with no subfloor?
Hi all. We have Doug Fir or Pine floors, very hard, laid directly on the joists. The main pathway from the front door to kitchen is full of squeaks. Since we are embarking on finishing the basement, we will need to take care of the squeaks soon. Any ideas on how to do it?
Thanks,
Diane

Re: Boomtown revival
Welcome Andrea. We've had some "oh, spit" moments with our 1908 cottage too. Somehow we get through each challenge and hopefully you will too. We are here to listen and/or add our 2 cents worth of opinions on your projects. ;] My husband I are currently moving everything out of the basemen...

Brown concrete or is it stone?
I am scraping off 100+ years of paint off our front stoop. What i have found underneath it all is a rich brown with a very fine texture. Is old concrete brown, like a rich brown gravy? The sides look like concrete, but badly patched and not brown.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Diane

Re: Curtain Question
I just couldn't see putting more holes in my restored trim so I used nice spring loaded rods and hung the curtains inside the trim. Looks nice and works great.
