Re: Opinions On Potential Purchase of Old Home

- get buy in from your significant other if you have one. If you don't have that you are ruined from the get go. don't overlook stuff like the sewer( has it ever been replaced?) the wiring(has it been re-done, or are you in for a full wiring job). Re: Antique washing machines

The old Maytag repairman must have cut his teeth on those ones;-) ah and now his apprentices are probably run off their feet Careful for children around them. I would have one more cousin if it weren't for a tragic accident with the rollers. I guess later ones had some sort of safety release. I have...

Re: Concrete box under main floor bathroom shower

Maybe it is a hole to pour money in? I was thinking grease trap, to be connected between the plumbing and the septic tank, but you did say it is clean and no plumbing. Maybe City sewer came about shortly after it was built? or they didn't want to use it because the house became to be sitting on top ...

Re: Old House Electrical Help

"there are other devices plugged into the same outlet " It sounds like someone has tapped into the range cable for added outlets. You should have a range cable outlet at one end and a fusebox at the other end of this wire. I am not an electrician but I am sure there are no other outlets al...

Re: Old House Electrical Help

run some new wire in and dont risk burning your house down. I rewired mine and did minimal damage to the walls. if you must do it on your own get an electrician for a day to show you how to fish wires, you need a fish tape and a long bendable drill bit. There are lots of tricks but even if you need ...

Re: I've been stripping- repost from OHW

I am wondering what the denatured alcohol does in the cleaning process, was it first coated with shellac before it was ever painted? I have been doing all of my moldings and trim and windows and have a lot done and a lot to do. That which was previously shellacked is easy, the other stuff is more wo...

Re: Need House Painting Tips

I use danish oil a lot for inside trim, and sometimes mix that with turpentine to get better penetration. if it were used in place of BLO ( under the paint) would the results be detrimental? The danish oil dries fairly quickly by comparison so must have some driers in it. It does a good job of dryin...
