Re: Thornewood Antics

Thank you, Ron. It fits right into Edwardian style. I see that clearly, after searching photos. Stubborn black contaminant in the varnish. Working on it. ETA: Here's a view of the black "contaminant" (for want of a better word) in the finish on the top of the sideboard. The beautiful grain is beginn...

Re: Thornewood Antics

A few years ago, I bought a sideboard for my dining room. Requirements were: oak, small enough for this modestly-sized room, and from an era corresponding to or earlier than the house (1918). I believe I've satisfied all three criteria but not able to come up with an approximate date of manufacture....

Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.

That sounds like a good solution. I was surprised to learn that you're in the same hardiness zone (minimum temperature) as I was in Connecticut, although you're considerably further north. The tempering effect of the Great Lakes, perhaps? In any case, the faux fireplace (with authentic elements) wil...

Re: Thornewood Antics

There is a number but no triangle or mention of England, other than Burslem, which of course is there.

Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.

It's nice that the door hasn't been painted, and I like the two different stains.

As far as the brick wallpaper, a phrase I've often uttered, "what were they thinking?" comes to mind. In your case, I might add, "Indoor chimney?"

Beautiful room, Ron. Keep those photos coming!

Re: Thornewood Antics

This is the fireplace. Any suggestions for restoration of the brick to its natural state would be greatly appreciated. 2619 I don't need more stuff, but I couldn't pass up this pitcher in a thrift shop for 75 cents. 2618 It's marked: Camille Burgess & Leigh Middleport Pottery Burslem No chips, crack...

Re: Tour of Lights

A few neighbors have mentioned the Corona beer TV ad which, by the way, is the longest-running Christmas commercial. If it brings a smile, then I consider my mission accomplished. The palm is Sabal palmetto , which is native to the southeast US. Those are the leaf bases, which persist for a few year...

Knapp "dovetailing"

About 60 years ago, my mother pulled into the driveway with a piece of furniture sticking out of the trunk of her 1953 Oldsmobile and a sheepish look on her face. "Oh, jeez," my father teased. "She's been out trash-picking again." My mother described the small cabinet as a "commode," intended to hol...

Re: What I did at my house today...

Awaiting staircase pictures.

Skim-coated the dining room ceiling yesterday. Sanded (it looked like the surface of the moon) and primered (it looked smooooth - go figure). Ceilings are awkward to work on!
