Re: What I did at my house today...

I decided that the big landscaping area I made in the front yard last fall would be a kind of memorial to my mom, who loved planting things. So, I went all out at the garden center on Saturday, and spent yesterday afternoon planting 12 different perennial plants in this area. (this, in addition to t...

Re: I Took the Plunge!

Welcome to the neighborhood MJ1987! This is like a family reunion for kitchen sinks, because I also have a sink almost just like yours and Lily's. But, mine is the youngest, since it was cast in 1941. You probably already looked this up on Wikipedia, but in case you didn't, the company known as Amer...

Re: Beebe: kitchen floor

Maybe I missed it, and I'm also late to the party, but have you considered removing the tile from the dining room floor to repair the kitchen floor? As for carpet in kitchens and bathrooms, my grandparents did that. They were children during the depression, so I think they viewed carpet as luxurious.

Re: What I did at my house today...

It's been awhile since I've visited this thread; lots of great work, everyone! (and cute kids, too!) I can relate to the tedious work, and final satisfaction of stripping porch railings and balusters, although I had far fewer to do. I almost never remember to post here on the day I actually do somet...

Re: This old house rant

Has anyone been watching the newest TOH project(s) in Detroit? m I enjoyed the first episode. The homeowners seem to want to do a lot of the work themselves. They don't seem to have an unlimited budget, and just want to make their house (that had been abandoned for a few years) livable again. And, i...

Re: Window treatments

Bump! I've grown used to the frilly shears in the original post. I still may get some tabbed shears, though, someday. But, I have a new question. I'm thinking I want to order some vintage style roller shades for my bedroom windows. Does anyone have experience with companies that specialize in them, ...

Re: Blueprints

Fantastic find! If those are sheets 6-8, I wonder what was on the first 5 sheets, and if there were any additional sheets after the plans. I've never seen a set of plans for a house from that era, but I have seen plans for larger buildings, and the number of sheets in a set was surprisingly small. F...

Re: What makes a good ladder ?

I prefer ladders with a D-shaped step to use as an angle guide (without which I tend to put the base of the ladder too close to the wall). I apologize if someone else already mentioned this. I got my first experience with using an extension ladder last summer. I was very worried about falling, so I...
