Re: I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore

The house in the original post wasn't intended to be a recreation of a Victorian/historical home. It's just a high-end modern house. I can't tell if you're being facetious. For the interior, yes but the exterior employs way too many blatant imitations of the Queen Anne style to be merely coincident...

Re: I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore

A couple thoughts: The house in the original post wasn't intended to be a recreation of a Victorian/historical home. It's just a high-end modern house. I do think some of the design criticisms are valid, though. (I'm on the fence about the downspouts on the front; if you're going to spend the money ...

Re: I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore

JRC, as a pro, your thoughts on building this in today's world. With mods it could be brought up to code. Could it be done for the same 4 million, or even 5? m I see nothing here that could not be souced today. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with cost estimating. But, depending on your...

Those couldn't have been a cheap repairs, but don't underestimate the value of peace of mind. :)

Re: I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore

I partially agree with the premise of this thread. The old standards/rules of thumb that were used to design houses in the past seem to have been thrown out or forgotten. But, as a design professional, (my work only involves commercial stuff, though) I feel confident that I could design a house with...

Re: Western PA beauty

Somewhat related to my post above, here is the Renner Mansion, in my neighborhood: http://www.allthingsyoungstown.net/renn ... index.html

Thankfully, the owner cares at least a little bit about the place.

Re: Western PA beauty

I can't fathom the circumstances under which a family would leave a home like this, basically abandon it...imagine all the birthdays and holidays and meals and weddings and births that happened here.....what a gorgeous home! ...jade This house is in the rust belt, not too far from me. While the det...

Re: Kitchen Configuration?

Not sure what you mean about my "need to remuddle." I don't think Gothichome meant anything personally. Most people, even some old house lovers, will walk into an old kitchen like yours and assume that the whole thing needs to be gutted to the studs to start from scratch. When, in reality...

Re: 1870s College Academic Building

That looks very nice! I think I'd miss the creaky floors, too. But I'm glad the building was restored, and attention was paid to making it look period appropriate. Kent State began reinvesting in their older buildings (the area known as "front campus" has the original KSU buildings from th...
