Re: Hi All - New Member from OHW
Hey everyone, So sometimes life changes your plans. The family & I are relocating to Charlotte, NC for my job. Although we are excited to go, sad to leave our first old house behind. If anyone is interested in our house, it will be going on the market soon by the relocation company. I haven't be...

Re: New Front Porch
The flagstones I used go down 36" and sit on a stone tamped base. I don't expect much movement. Regarding the T&G, the originals were tight together and had no issues with buckling. Also, I used salvaged wood that had tight vertical grain so I anticipate growth to be minimal. Good suggestio...

Re: New Front Porch
Yea, post was removed to replace the porch floor. I put my stone support for the floor under where the post goes.
It would swing free due to rott, so it isn't carrying much weight and should be fine sitting on top of the porch floor.

Pegged lap joint, I'll have to read up on that. I'm assuming that the dimensions of the original post won't match up with current lumber dimensions.

Filler material
Thanks all for the advice on filler material.
I have the porch base done and next step is to repair the rotted post. Any suggestions on how to repair this bottom?

Re: New Front Porch
Hi All, Made quite a bit of progress on the porch rebuild. image8.JPG I framed out the structure with pressure treated wood and lag bolted to the house. image9.JPG I dug down ~3ft for the supporting stone at the corner. image7.JPG I was able to pick up some 3.25" T&G boards at a salvage pla...

Re: New Front Porch
Any idea why an oak tree was planted (or allowed to grow from seed)so close to the porch. I'm pretty sure they would have known how large oak trees get. Hey Gothichome, From what I can gather the tree pre-dated the house by about 50yrs or so. When the tree was cut down I counted the rings to around...

New Front Porch
I'm finally getting around to this after 8yrs, and like all fun summers, I start my projects in the fall... We had to take the giant white oak down that was growing into our house ~5yrs ago, but the service stump grinder couldn't handle the stump... IMG_0918.JPG While we were busy in the inside of t...

Re: Repainting concrete
Hi All, Just a follow up, I used the BM N122 floor & patio paint in our entry and it came out great and is holding up to traffic excellent. Not a scratch or chip anywhere. I was able to fill in the chips to the old painted floor with a 2-part epoxy and then I just DA sanded the whole floor to sc...
